Visual Arts

I have always been enamored with visual art. As a kid, I always had a paint brush in hand & I had an obsession with creating my newest masterpiece. I would always find ways to feed my creative soul.

Science

I have a B.A. in Biochemistry and a M.S. in Material Science & Engineering.Science & Engineering has taught me a lot about understanding complex processes & analyzing data.

Research

I have been a Research Chemist/Engineer for over 10 years. I love conducting research & understanding the world around me. Research fulfills my deep curiosity.

Front-End Web Development

I was chosen among 15,000 people world-wide to received the Grow with Google Challenge scholarship, which teaches HTML, CSS, JavaScript, & jQuery. Based on the progress & performance in the course & projects, they chose 1,500 people from the original 15,000 to receive the Grow with Google Front-End Web Developer Nanodegree Scholarship. I was chosen to be one of those lucky 1,500 people. The courses and curriculum are from Udacity. Shout out to Google and Udacity for this amazing opportunity! I learned a ton about front-end technologies along with tons of design methodologies for responsive design, accessibility design, and along with a ton of other design principles.

Web Design

After learning the basics of front-end web developer skills. I decided to create my own website. I wanted a place to share my thoughts and adventures with the world, so I created a blog. I designed everything by myself & was really proud of myself. I had created a new hobby for myself that had the potential to become a side-gig for myself with some experience and practice.

UX & UI Design

My ambition, budding talents, and eagerness to learn drew the attention of the right people at the right time & I was offered an opportunity to become a UX & UI Designer for an Air Force Initiative called Kessel Run. Kessel Run invested in helping me learn design methodologies by placing me on a few different teams, one of which was fairly new and starting out at Pivotal. Pivotal is a agile methodology consulting firm that trains teams about product management, UX/UI product design, and developer skills. Teams typically have a 6-month engagement in their beginning stages. During these 6-months, Pivotal employees are embedded into the team as they teach good practices of the business while instilling agile methodologies. I have learned a ton about user-centered design, user-interviews/research, solution validation, brain-storming techniques, design crits, wire-framing, and many more valuable skills.I have finally found a career that fits my unique skillset. Being a UX/UI designer fulfills my need for research & data analysis along with my innate yearning to create something intuitive and beautiful. Many people would find this path a bit unorthodox, but having over ten years of research experience, ability to understand complex systems, and experience in data analytics has made me a very creative problem-solver. My attention to detail, innate artistic ability, and empathetic nature are all characteristics needed for effective UX/UI design. This unique combination of skills, knowledge, and characteristics have made me a designer that exceeds expectations.

My Design Process

I have learned that good design is an interative process. It requires collaboration with multiple teams, stakeholders, and, most importantly, the end users. User-centered design is the key to success. It is easy for most people to become attached to initial design solutions, but it is important to remember that user-validation should dictate the direction of your design decisions. Forgoing research and testing introduces a ton of unnecessary risk and rarely leads to an effective solution that users love.  It is important to remember that the design solutions created in the early stages may not solve the entire problem because depth of knowledge about the problem typically requires continuous feedback from users. It is important to gain an intimate knowledge of the user’s processes and needs by asking the five W’s ( Who, What, Where, When, and Why) before attempting to solutionize the How.

Let’s remember that UX means User Experience, and as a UX designer we want to create solutions that are both intuitive and enjoyable. Great designs require a designer that is eager to gain in-depth knowledge of users, their environment, mind-set, pain-points, and their goals. As designers, it is our job to advocate for our user’s needs. We do this by conducting research, talking to users, getting continuous feedback, testing prototypes, and collaborating with different teams. User-validation helps keep projects on track and ensures our team that we are building the most effective solution.

I believe that successful design projects stem from a balanced team that utilizes effective communication and keeping the end-user as the central focus.
